Retrofit MV Alka

From closed water to SUPREME closed oil-lubrication

In 2010 the Lithuanian Shipping Company (LSC) faced difficulties with the shaft of the MV Alka. Time was of the essence, since the dry bulk carrier MV Alka had to be put back in operation within shortest possible notice. Baltmarine Trading and IHC Lagersmit teamed up to investigate the current situation and design an alternative stern tube system. LSC decided to retrofit the existing water lubricated system, consisting of a coated steel shaft with stainless steel sleeves, Nitrile rubber bearings and mechanical seals. The new system consists of a closed oil-lubricated stern tube system with white metal IHC Lagersmit bearings and SUPREME (lip type) seals. The order was taken into production at 30-4-2010 and transported to LSC at 21-5-2010. Viktoras Chepys, Technical Director and Alfred Bogdevic, Superintending Engineer of LSC: “We chose for IHC Lagersmit because they could deliver the best alternative in the shortest possible notice.”
