IHC Lagersmit retrofits AVRA Shipping Group fleet
Category: Press release

The retrofit helps to ensure the AVRA tug delivering a top level of performance in any condition.
IHC Lagersmit, part of IHC Merwede, is appointed to retrofit the AVRA Shipping Group fleet of tug boats with a closed-oil, lubricated stern tube system. The system features SUPREME® seals and white metal bearing bushes and replaces the previous open-water, lubricated stern tube system on AVRA’s vessels.
The agreement highlights IHC Lagersmit’s speciality in providing sealing solutions in partnership with its customers. Through its dedicated retrofitting department, it also guarantees a high level of quality, complete compatibility, and a fast and efficient service in replacing seals.
To complete this order, IHC Lagersmit will assist AVRA with overhauling and equipping its complete fleet of ocean-going tug boats – the NORTH, EAST, SOUTH and WEST – with the new components in 2010. Two new vessels, the NORTHWIND and the SOUTHWIND, will also be fitted with SUPREME® seals.
Delivering between 28 and 50 Bollard Pull, the AVRA tugs often work on heavy duty projects in tough working environments. By installing the oil-lubricated system, AVRA is eliminating the possible risks associated with water-lubricated systems. In fact, the retrofit will help to guarantee a top-level performance from its fleet in any conditions.
The new system will be equipped with IHC Lagersmit’s SUPREME® forward and aft seals. The 190 aft seal is made of bronze, is fitted with an extra sand barrier and runs on a regular, chrome steel liner.
Bert Groen, superintendent at AVRA, says, “AVRA chose SUPREME® seals due to their proven performance. We have also gone with IHC Lagersmit, because of the well-established relationships between the two companies.”
